Abstract

While existing research has largely focused on involuntary social isolation, less attention has been given to how individuals actively withdraw from social engagement and experience this phenomenon. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of voluntary social isolation and its impact on mental health. A qualitative design involving semi-structured interviews was employed to explore the phenomenon in depth. Data from a small purposive sample (N = 6) were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The analysis generated five overarching themes: (i) social isolation as both withdrawal from social demands and a reflective turning inward; (ii) isolation as a response to life crises that enables existential reflection and eventual reintegration; (iii) the oscillation between despair and personal growth; (iv) the natural and restorative dimension of social isolation as a vital space for reflection; and (v) the emergence of transformative experiences in the space between shadow and light, where reflection, solitude, and engagement intersect. The study highlights the dual nature of social isolation, which may function as both a potential risk and a resource for personal reflection and revaluation. The findings underscore key phenomenological concepts and illustrate how social isolation shapes Dasein’s being-in-the-world. Recognition of its constructive aspects may inform interventions that balance restorative solitude with social engagement. Future studies could employ mixed-methods approaches combining IPA with quantitative measures of well-being and creativity to clarify how specific isolation practices relate to psychological outcomes.
