Abstract

The study aimed to design, construct and structurally evaluate a mobile floating platform for reservoir-based research activities at Ukai Reservoir, Gujarat, India. The platform measured 16 × 36 ft and was fabricated from 2 × 2 inch galvanised iron square pipes, with an inner framework designed to distribute loads and secure the flotation units. Galvanised iron plates measuring 8 × 4 ft and 2.5 mm thick formed the working deck, while 200 L high-density polyethylene barrels installed beneath the frame provided buoyancy. Red oxide primer and protective paint were applied to the metal components to reduce corrosion during exposure to reservoir water and humid conditions. Mooring and towing attachment points were incorporated at the corners to support anchoring and relocation by boat. Structural performance was assessed under actual reservoir conditions through observations of buoyancy, stability, load distribution, deformation, vibration and displacement of the flotation units. The completed platform remained stable during deployment and maintained a functional working surface under moderate wind, wave action, water currents and operational loading. No visible structural deformation, excessive vibration or displacement of the barrels was observed. The reinforced inner frame, galvanised iron deck plates and evenly distributed flotation barrels contributed to structural rigidity and balanced flotation. The findings indicate that the constructed platform provides a practical, mobile and durable working structure for reservoir-based field operations requiring stable access to different sampling locations.
