Abstract

Groundwater is one of the most important freshwater resources globally and serves as the primary source for drinking and agricultural activities. However, rapid agricultural intensification has significantly contributed to the deterioration of groundwater quality. Agricultural activities are a major source of non-point source pollution, which is diffuse in nature and difficult to monitor and control. The excessive application of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, along with improper irrigation practices and inadequate management of livestock waste, has led to the infiltration of harmful substances, such as nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals, and pathogenic microorganisms, into aquifers. This review critically examines the major agricultural sources of groundwater contamination and evaluates their impact on environmental sustainability and human health, including risks such as waterborne diseases and long-term toxicity. It further explores various techniques for assessing groundwater quality, including modern monitoring tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies. Additionally, this study highlights sustainable agricultural practices, such as organic farming, precision irrigation, and integrated nutrient management, as effective strategies for mitigating contamination. Overall, this review underscores the urgent need for sustainable management approaches to protect groundwater resources and ensure long-term water security. The integration of innovative technologies, integrated management strategies, and robust policy interventions is essential. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques also represents an emerging and promising approach in groundwater management.
