Prevailing Drug Abuse Prevention Programs and Students’ Indiscipline in Public Secondary Schools in Fafi Sub County, Garissa County

Abstract

Education nowadays is highly embraced by all the stakeholders as a principal promoter of economic, social, and political progress. However, attainment of these educational objectives is increasingly threatened by the epidemic problem of drug abuse in schools.  Drug abuse is associated with indiscipline among public secondary school students. Should the emerging problem not be well-managed, schools are at the risk of becoming ever more difficult to handle, the associated rise in indiscipline. So, the current study was to assess existing programs of drug abuse prevention and students’ indiscipline in public secondary schools in Fafi Sub County, Garissa County. The study, which adopted descriptive research design and employed mixed method, used 19teachers and 28 student leaders as its target population. The study, using census includes the entire target population as respondents. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire or the student leaders as well as an interview guide for teachers. During data analysis, quantitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics while inferential analysis was through Correlation Analysis, Qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis The study found that prevailing drug abuse prevention programs significantly affect student indiscipline in public secondary schools (p< 0.01; r= 0.778). Therefore, to enhance student’s, discipline in public secondary schools, the study recommends for improvement of existing programs.
