Abstract
This work reviews the concept of drilling mud corrosion by highlighting the major corrosion types associated with drilling operations, mechanisms and control measures. Fatigue stress failures (stress corrosion fatigue and Sulphide stress cracking) were explained while some processes that could increase the susceptibility to fatigue stress failure and other forms of corrosion were also described. Since drilling mud corrosion cannot be eliminated in drilling operations, control measures are eminent. These include corrosion monitoring and control, quality control, effective inspection strategies, enhanced manufacturing processes for drill pipes and optimised experimental data base on corrosion behaviour of drilling mud and the operating environment.
