Teenage Pregnancy and Its Impact on Fetal and Maternal Outcome by Retrospective Analysis in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Objective: To study the Feto-Maternal outcome of Adolescent Pregnancy. Study Design: Retrospective Observational Study conducted in Saveetha medical college and hospital. Duration of Study: Two years January 2015 - January 2017. Patients and Methods: Data was collected from the case papers of the pregnant adolescents and their fetomaternal outcome was studied. Results: More number of pregnancies (71%) were at nineteen years of age .44 % of teenage pregnancies ended in miscarriage. 91.5 % - were Primigravida. 9.5 % were Gravida two (G2). Equal distribution was found in the mode of delivery. One third had preterm deliveries. All Lower segment caesarean sections were emergencies. Conclusion: Proper antenatal care, institutional delivery and postnatal care will help in reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in adolescent pregnancy. Prevention of adolescent pregnancy can only be achieved by education of girl child, marriage at legal age, prevention of unwanted pregnancy along with proper health and life skill education to both boys and girls.
