Knowledge and Behaviours of Adolescents on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Selected Secondary High Schools in IFE Central Local Government Area, Nigeria

Abstract

This study explored the knowledge and behaviours of adolescents on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in selected secondary high schools in Ife Central Local Government Area, Nigeria. A preliminary survey revealed that adolescents’ knowledge on SRHR is limited, with less than 50% having adequate understanding in prior studies. The descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional research design was employed, targeting senior secondary school students (aged 10–19 years). The inclusion criteria were students enrolled in senior secondary classes, excluding those who had already graduated. Using Fisher’s formula, 360 respondents were selected via multistage sampling. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 23, both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed. Results showed that 55.6% had good knowledge, while 53.3% demonstrated good behaviours towards SRHR. Religious factors, cultural norms, and poor parent-child communication were the major challenges identified. A weak negative relationship was found between knowledge and behaviours (r = -0.163, p < 0.05). The study emphasized the need for targeted education and improved communication strategies to address these challenges.
