Sinugbuanong Binisaya Nursery Rhymes in Primary Grades: An Early Development Index (EDI) Checklist

Abstract

This study examined Sinugbuanong Binisaya nursery rhymes through the Early Development Instrument (EDI) framework and developed an EDI-based checklist to identify the developmental domains and subdomains reflected in the selected rhymes. A quantitative descriptive-evaluative design was used. Content analysis assessed the selected rhymes against EDI domains and subdomains, while fifty-five ECE teachers in Digos City evaluated the checklist for content validity, usability and feasibility, and overall quality. The findings showed that the rhymes reflected one to two EDI domains, with variation in subdomain coverage. The highest domain coverage involved two of the five EDI domains, while the most developmentally varied entries reflected three subdomains. Teacher evaluation produced mean scores of 4.63 for content validity, 4.73 for usability and feasibility, and 4.74 for overall quality. These ratings indicate strong perceived relevance, clarity, practicality, and overall acceptability among the participating validators. The results further show that no single rhyme represented all EDI domains or subdomains, supporting the use of multiple rhymes when broader developmental coverage is desired. The developed checklist provides a structured basis for identifying culturally relevant Sinugbuanong Binisaya nursery rhymes according to the developmental characteristics reflected in their lyrics, actions, and messages. Further testing is needed to establish broader reliability and construct-related validity.
