Performance of Senior Secondary School Student in English Language as Correlate of Academic Performance in General Subjects

The study compared the relationship of academic performance of Secondary School Students in English language with Mathematics, Biology and Economics in relation to school type and parents educational background. The study was conducted in some Secondary Schools spread across four Local government areas in Ogun state, Nigeria. Two instruments, performance in English and General Subjects (PEGS), and an achievement test in English and General subjects (ATES) were used to collect data from the two hundred students who were randomly sampled as participants. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The finding revealed that there exist significant relationship between the achievement of students in Mathematics, Biology, Economics and by their performances in English. It was recommended that teachers should perform their supervisory roles of giving out exercises and marking at the expected time so that the students can get the feedback at the appropriate time while parents should also be favorably disposed to the academic work of their children.
